Iran says it is moving its assets out of European banks to protect them against possible U.N. sanctions.
Central Bank Governor Ebrahim Sheibani was quoted today (Friday) saying Iran has started withdrawing the assets and transferring them to other locations. He did not specify where.
Meanwhile, Russia's top atomic energy official, Sergei Kiryenko, says Iran is ready for detailed discussions on Moscow's proposal to conduct Tehran's uranium enrichment in Russia.
He says Iranian officials are due in Moscow soon for discussions. The proposal is aimed at eliminating concerns that Tehran could enrich its own uranium for use in nuclear weapons.
The United States and European Union have called for Iran to be referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions over its nuclear activities. They support the Russian proposal as a way to break the deadlock.
The U.S. accuses Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons -- a charge Tehran denies.
