Russian authorities say at least 51 people died after a roof collapsed at a Moscow market. At least 32 people were injured, including two rescuers.
Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that broke out after the collapse.
Rescuers are pumping warm air into the rubble to protect trapped survivors as they call for silence every so often to listen for the voices of the buried. Many victims are from the Caucasus, particularly Azerbaijan.
Authorities say they will give about 35-hundred dollars in compensation to the victims' families.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called for an investigation into the cause. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov mentioned three possibilities: faulty maintenance, a buildup of heavy snow or design errors.
Officials say the accident took place before the market opened.
Many vendors were inside preparing for sales during a Russian national holiday (Defenders of the Motherland Day) honoring the armed services.
