Thousands of Taiwan opposition supporters are protesting in Taipei today (Sunday) against President Chen Shui-bian's hard-line policy on China.
Police and organizers estimate a crowd of at least 30 thousand people.
Mr. Chen ignited the latest controversy with China on February 27, when he said an advisory council (National Unification Council) aimed at an eventual reunification with the mainland had ceased to function.
The statement provoked angry condemnation from Chinese leaders and strong criticism from Taiwan's Nationalist Party and its legislative allies.
The president's political party (Democratic Progressive Party) plans to hold its own rally March 18 aimed at raising international awareness of China's military threats against Taiwan.
