한국 농림부는 최근 미국에서 광우병이 발생함에 따라 미국산 쇠고기 수입 재개를 5월까지 연기한다고 밝혔습니다. 미국 농무부는 앞서 이번주, 남부 알라바마주에서 광우병 검사를 실시한 결과 소 한마리가 양성반응을 보였다고 밝혔습니다.
미국 검역관들은 지난 2003년이후 국내에서 두 건의 광우병을 발견한 바 있습니다. 미국 축산업계의 광우병 발견은 한국을 포함한 많은 국가들로 하여금 미국산 쇠고기를 수입하지 못하도록 만들고 있습니다.
한국은 지난 2003년 12월 미국산 쇠고기의 선적을 금지하기 전까지 지구촌에서 세번째로 높은 미국산 쇠고기 수입국이었습니다.

South Korea says it will delay the resumption of U.S. beef imports until May, following the latest case of mad cow disease in the United States. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed a cow in the southern state of Alabama tested positive for mad cow disease.
U.S. investigators have found two previous cases of mad cow disease, or B.S.E., since 2003. The discovery of B.S.E. in the American cattle industry prompted many nations to ban U.S. beef imports, including South Korea.
In January, Seoul agreed to a partial resumption of American beef exports to South Korea. Beef shipments had been expected to resume next month.
The agreement, now put off for another month, allows imports of American boneless beef from cattle under 30 months of age. South Korea was the third largest market for U.S. beef before it banned shipments in December, 2003.
