England's national football (soccer) team has defeated Paraguay, 1-0, in a Group-B World Cup match in Frankfurt, Germany.
An own-goal by Paraguayan team captain Carlos Gamarra in the fourth minute was all the scoring England needed. David Beckham made a free kick from the left flank and Gamarra inadvertently headed the ball into his own net.
England's next match is Thursday against Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg. Paraguay faces Sweden in Berlin on the same day.
Other action today (Saturday) has Sweden facing Trinidad and Tobago (in Dortmund) and three-time champion Argentina facing Ivory Coast (in Hamburg) in A Group-C match.
