The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill to increase the minimum wage for American workers for the first time since 1997.
Lawmakers approved the measure early this (Saturday) morning by a vote of 230-180. It would gradually boost the average hourly minimum wage from five dollars, 15 cents an hour to seven dollars, 25 cents by the middle of 2009.
The proposed bill also cuts inheritance taxes on multimillion-dollar estates, and extends a number of popular tax cuts.
Conservative Republicans are strongly opposed to a wage hike, but many Republicans went along with the measure when it was combined with their priority issue of cutting the estate tax.
Democrats have vowed to make the minimum wage issue a centerpiece of their drive to regain control of the House during this November's congressional elections.
