유엔의 한 새로운 보고서는 올해 에이즈로 인한 사망자수가 300여만명에 이를 것이라고 말했습니다. 이 유엔 보고서는 현재 세계적으로 3,900여만명이 에이즈 바이러스인 HIV에 감염된 것으로 추정하고 있습니다. 남아프리카는 2,500만명이 감염돼 계속 세계 최고의 감염률을 보이고 있습니다. 유엔의 아프리카지역 에이즈 지원팀의 마크 스털링 반장은 우리는 세계 인구의 10%가 모여 사는 아프리카에 전세계 HIV 감염자의 3분의 2인 약 64%가 있는 것으로 파악하고 있으며, 이로 인해 아프리카가 불균형한 부담을 계속 안고 있다”고 말합니다.
유엔 보고서에 따르면, 카리브지역은 세계에서 두번째로 높은 에이즈 감염지역입니다. 에이즈는 이제 15세에서 44세 사이의 성인들의 가장 중요한 사망원인이 되고 있습니다. 유엔은 올해 동아시아의 에이즈 감염자수가 50% 증가했다고 밝히고 있는데, 주로 중국과 인도네시아, 베트남에서 급속히 늘어난데 기인하고 있습니다. 중앙아시아도 에이즈가 급속히 확산되고 있습니다.
에이즈 감염자의 거의 절반이 여성들입니다. 유엔 보고서는 지난 2년 사이에 세계 여러 지역에서 여성 에이즈 감염자수가 증가했다고 말하고 있습니다. 사하라 이남 지역에서는 에이즈에 감염된 대부분의 성인들이 여성들입니다. 마크 스털링 반장은 아프리카에서는 젊은 여성들의 에이즈 감염률이 높다고 말합니다.
수털링 반장은 “이 유엔 보고서가 HIV와 에이즈에 감염된 전체 여성의 4분의 3이 아프리카에 있으며, 아프리카의 HIV와 에이즈 감염자의 대략 60%가 여성들이고, 특히 더욱 암담한 사실은 HIV와 에이즈에 감염된 15세 내지 24세의 젊은이들 가운데 76%가 여성이라는 사실을 강조하고 있다”고 말합니다.
미국은 전세계 1백여개국에서 에이즈 예방과 치료 등 퇴치사업에 150억달러 이상을 제공할 것을 다짐해 왔습니다. 특히 세계에서 에이즈 감염자수가 많은 15개 국가에 대해 집중적으로 지원되고 있습니다. 에이즈는 치유될 수 있는 병이라고 파월 장관은 말합니다. “젊은이들에 대한 계몽교육, 사전 예방, 성생활 절제, 항 레트로 바이러스약의 공급, 치료제 가격의 인하, 치료를 받겠다는 마음의 자세, 에이즈 감염자를 배척하지 않는 통념등 이런 모든 요인들이 바로 에이즈와의 싸움에 대한 광범위한 접근방법”이라고 파월 장관은 말합니다.

A new United Nations report says the AIDS epidemic will claim more than three-million lives this year. The UN report says an estimated thirty-nine million people worldwide are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Southern Africa continues to be the hardest hit region, with more than twenty-five million people infected. Mark Stirling is director of the UN AIDS Regional Support Team in Africa:
"What we recognize is that with Africa, the home to some ten percent of the world's population, we are also the home of roughly sixty-four percent, two-thirds of those living with HIV. So there's a disproportionate burden obviously continuing to be borne within this continent."
The Caribbean is the second most affected region, according to the UN report. AIDS is now the leading cause of death there among adults aged fifteen to forty-four. The UN says that HIV infections rose fifty percent in East Asia this year, largely because of growing epidemics in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Central Asia is also experiencing a rise in AIDS cases.
Nearly half of all those infected with HIV are women. The UN report says the number of infected women has increased in each region of the world over the past two years. In sub-Saharan Africa, a majority of infected adults are women. Mark Stirling says the epidemic is taking a heavy toll among young African women
"The report stresses the fact that three-quarters of all women living with H-I-V and AIDS are in Africa, that roughly sixty percent of people living with H-I-V and AIDS within Africa are women, and also highlights the horrendous fact that amongst young people fifteen to twenty-four, roughly seventy-six percent of young people living with HIV and AIDS are female."
The United States has committed more than fifteen-billion dollars to the prevention, treatment, and care of people infected with or affected by AIDS in over one-hundred countries. A special focus has been put on fifteen of the world's hardest hit countries. AIDS "is a disease that can be dealt with," says U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. "Whether it's the education of young people, prevention, abstinence, anti-retroviral drugs, getting the costs down, looking for a cure, not stigmatizing people who are suffering from this disease" -- all these, says Mr. Powell, are part of a comprehensive approach to fighting AIDS.
