한국과 일본이 역사 문제에 대한 해법을 발표한데 대해 미국 정부가 일제히 환영 입장을 밝혔습니다. 바이든 대통령은 이번 발표가 한일 관계의 획기적 새 장이라고 평가했고, 블링컨 국무장관은 양국 정부의 용기와 비전에 찬사를 보낸다고 말했습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
조 바이든 미국 대통령은 6일 한국 정부가 강제징용 배상 해법을 발표하고 일본이 역사 인식에 대한 역대 내각의 입장을 계승하고 있다고 밝힌데 대해 ‘획기적인 새 장’을 열었다고 평가했습니다.
[바이든 대통령] “Today’s announcements between the Republic of Korea and Japan mark a groundbreaking new chapter of cooperation and partnership between two of the United States’ closest allies. With two historic foreign ministerial statements, President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida are taking a critical step to forge a future for the Korean and Japanese people that is safer, more secure, and more prosperous.”
바이든 대통령은 “오늘 한국과 일본의 발표는 미국의 가장 가까운 동맹들 간의 협력과 파트너십의 획기적인 새 장이 될 것”이라며 “역사적인 두 외교장관 담화를 통해 윤석열 대통령과 기시다 후미오 총리가 더 안전하고 굳건하며 번영하는 한일 양국 국민의 미래를 열어가기 위한 중요한 걸음을 내디뎠다”고 말했습니다.
이어 “미국은 이번 합의가 지속적인 진전으로 이어질 수 있도록 한일 양국 지도자들의 노력을 앞으로도 지지해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.

When fully realized, their steps will help us to uphold and advance our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. 바이든 대통령은 이어 “양국간 조치가 완전히 실현될 때 자유롭고 개방적인 인도태평양 지역을 향한 우리의 공통된 비전을 지키고 발전시키는 데 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했습니다.
이어 “앞으로도 미한일 3국 동맹을 강화하고 발전시켜 나가길 희망한다”며 “오늘의 발표가 다시 말해주듯 미한일 3국이 함께 할 때 우리와 전 세계가 더 안전하고 번영할 것”이라고 말했습니다.
앞서 박진 한국 외교부 장관은 6일 서울 외교부 청사에서 ‘강제징용 대법원 판결 관련 정부 입장 발표’ 기자회견을 갖고 2018년 한국 대법원으로부터 배상 확정판결을 받은 일제 강제징용 피해자들에게 국내 재단이 대신 판결금을 지급한다고 밝혔습니다.
박진 장관은 국내적 의견 수렴과 일본과의 협의 결과 등을 바탕으로 이런 방안을 결정했다고 설명했습니다.
기시다 후미오 일본 총리는 6일 "한국 정부의 조치는 한일 관계를 건전한 관계로 되돌리기 위한 것으로 평가한다"며 "1998년 한일 공동선언을 포함해 역사 인식에 관한 역대 내각의 입장을 전체적으로 계승하고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
토니 블링컨 국무장관도 성명을 내고 “민감한 역사적 현안들에 대한 논의의 결론에 관한 한국과 일본의 오늘 역사적 발표를 환영한다”고 밝혔습니다.
[블링컨 장관] “We welcome today’s historic announcements by the Governments of the Republic of Korea and Japan regarding the conclusion of discussions on sensitive historical issues. The ROK and Japan are two of the United States’ most important allies, and we are inspired by the work they have done to advance their bilateral relations. We applaud President Yoon, Prime Minister Kishida, and their respective administrations for their courage and vision, and call on the international community to join our commendation of this momentous achievement. The trilateral relationship between the United States, the ROK, and Japan is central to our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region, which is why I, along with other senior Department colleagues, have invested so much time and focus on this critical partnership. We look forward to continuing to work with both countries, including through our regular trilateral dialogues, to advance global peace and security.”
블링컨 장관은 “한국과 일본은 미국의 가장 중요한 동맹국들”이라며 “양국관계를 증진시키기 위해 그들이 한 일에 우리는 고무됐다”고 밝혔습니다.
이어 “우리는 윤 대통령, 기시다 총리, 그리고 양국 정부의 용기와 비전에 대해 찬사를 보낸다”며 “국제사회도 이 기념비적 성취에 대한 우리의 찬사에 동참하기를 요청한다”고 밝혔습니다.
블링컨 장관은 “미국, 한국, 일본의 삼각관계는 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양 지역에 대한 공통비전에 핵심적”이라며 “그렇기 때문에 나와 다른 국무부 고위 관리들이 이 중요한 협력관계에 많은 시간을 들이고 집중한 것”이라고 말했습니다.
이어 “우리는 전 세계 평화와 안보를 증진하기 위해 정기적인 삼자 대화 등을 통해 양국과 계속 공조해 나가길 바란다”고 밝혔습니다.
웬디 셔먼 미 국무부 부장관도 트위터에 조현동 외교 1차관과 모리 다케오 외무성 사무차관을 언급하며 “민감한 역사 문제에 대한 논의를 마무리 지은 것을 축하한다”고 밝혔습니다.
아울러 지역과 그 너머의 평화와 안보를 위한 우리의 노력을 이어가길 고대한다고 덧붙였습니다.
필립 골드버그 주한 미국대사도 이날 성명을 내고 “한일 양국이 발표한 양국 관계의 역사적인 진전을 환영한다”며 “양국간 고통스러운 시기의 역사를 해결하기로 한 이번 합의는 한일간 신뢰와 화해를 증진할 것”이라고 말했습니다.
[골드버그 대사] “The agreement to deal with a painful period in history advances trust and reconciliation between the two nations and reflects the tremendous dedication and commitment of President Yoon to working with Prime Minister Kishida to redefine the future of the ROK-Japan bilateral relationship. 골드버그 대사는 이어 “우리는 미국의 최우방 동맹인 양국과 더욱 긴밀한 협력을 통해 한국과 일본 국민들의 안보를 보장하는 한편 역내 그리고 전 세계에서 평화와 공통된 가치를 증진하기 위해 협력하기를 희망한다”고 밝혔습니다.
