U.S. and Iraqi forces have launched an operation north of Baghdad that the military says includes the largest air assault since the U.S.-led invasion three years ago.
A U.S. statement says the operation near Samarra involves more than 50 aircraft and 15-hundred U.S. and Iraqi troops. The statement says initial reports indicate a number of enemy weapons caches were captured, but there is no immediate word on casualties.
Samarra was the site of an insurgent bombing attack last month that destroyed a revered Shi'ite mosque. The bombing of the Askariya shrine triggered days of sectarian violence that left hundreds dead.
Earlier Thursday, Iraq's new parliament was sworn in in Baghdad. The long-delayed inaugural session lasted less than an hour, before members adjourned.
