미국은 18일, 핵무기 제조에 이용되는 우라늄과 플라토늄의 생산을 금지하는 내용의 한 국제조약안을 밝혔습니다.
스테픈 레이디마커 국무부 군축담당 차관보 대행은 이날, 제네바에서 65개국 군축회의에 이 조약 초안을 제출했습니다. 이 조약은 분열물질로 알려진 플라토늄과 고도로 농축된 우라늄의 생산을 금지하고 있지만, 어떤 검증 조치는 담고 있지 않습니다.

The United States has unveiled a global treaty aimed at banning production of uranium and plutonium used in making nuclear weapons.
Acting assistant U.S. secretary of state for arms control, Stephen Rademaker, presented the draft treaty today (Thursday) to the 65-nation Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He told the gathering the treaty was necessary because of recent developments in Iran and North Korea.
The international community is engaged in separate standoffs with those two nations over their nuclear programs, over concerns they would try to make nuclear weapons.
The treaty would ban the production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, known as fissile material -- but does not include any verification measures. Rademaker says the United States will rely on countries who ratify the treaty to be responsible for abiding by it.
