Iraqi police say explosions in central Baghdad have killed 31 people and wounded more than 115 others.
Police say a car bomb and mortar fire caused the blasts today (Thursday) in a religiously mixed commercial district (Karrada).
The district is under the control of a major Shi'ite party. It was considered one of the few relatively safe areas of the Iraqi capital gripped by a bloody sectarian conflict.
The violence occurred as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ended a visit to Washington, where he and President Bush announced plans to increase the number of American troops in Baghdad to curb rising violence.
