미 국방부는 올해 70주년을 맞는 미한동맹이 세계에서 가장 강력한 동맹 중 하나라고 밝혔습니다. 한국과 함께 한반도와 인도태평양 지역의 안보를 강화할 것이라고 말했습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
미 국방부가 70주년을 맞은 미국과 한국의 군사 동맹을 높이 평가했습니다.
마틴 메이너스 국방부 대변인은 4일 VOA의 논평 요청에 “국방부는 세계에서 가장 강력한 동맹 중 하나인 한국군과의 지난 70년간의 협력을 매우 자랑스럽게 생각한다”고 밝혔습니다.
[메이너스 대변인] “The Department is extremely proud of our work with the ROK military over the last 70 years, together in one of the strongest alliances in the world. We will continue to build on this progress now and for decades to come, to bolster security and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the wider Indo-Pacific region.”
이어 “우리는 이러한 진전을 앞으로 수 십년 간 이어갈 것”이라며 “한반도와 더 넓은 인도태평양 지역의 안보와 안정을 강화하기 위해 노력할 것”이라고 말했습니다.
메이너스 대변인은 그러면서 로이드 오스틴 국방장관이 지난 11월 미한 동맹의 성과를 언급한 발언을 상기시켰습니다.
[메이너스 대변인] “As Secretary Austin said in November, “For nearly seven decades this alliance has been an anchor of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and across the broader Indo-Pacific. And today the ROK is a tremendously capable ally and a provider of security in the region, and a defender of the rules-based international order that keeps us all secure. So we will confront the challenges of the future the same way that we have for nearly 70 years: by standing shoulder-to-shoulder as proud allies. I'm enormously proud of what we've accomplished together, and I'm very grateful for the Republic of Korea's partnership.”
당시 오스틴 장관은 “거의 70년 동안 미한 동맹이 한반도와 더 넓은 인도태평양 전역에서 평화와 안보를 지탱해왔다”며 “오늘날 한국은 엄청나게 유능한 동맹국이자 이 지역의 안보 제공자이며 우리 모두를 안전하게 지켜주는 규칙에 기반한 국제 질서의 수호자"라고 말했습니다.
이어 “우리는 거의 70년 동안 했던 것과 같이 자랑스러운 동맹으로서 어깨를 나란히 하고 함께 서서 미래의 도전에 맞설 것”이라고 말했습니다.
오스틴 장관은 “지금까지 함께 성취한 것이 매우 자랑스럽고, 한국의 협력에 매우 감사한다”고 말했습니다.
한편 메이너스 대변인은 미한 동맹 70주년을 계기로 대규모 미한 연합합동화력시범 훈련을 검토하고 있다는 한국 군 발표에 대해 아직 올해 연합 훈련과 관련해 공개할 내용이 없다고 밝혔습니다.
[메이너스 대변인] “We don’t have anything specific to announce today, but our U.S. – ROK joint military exercises are longstanding, routine, and purely defensive in nature. They support the security of both the United States and the ROK. The United States remains committed to the security of the Republic of Korea and our combined defense posture in accordance with the ironclad U.S.-ROK Alliance.”
메이너스 대변인은 “오늘 구체적으로 발표할 내용은 없다”며 “하지만 미한 연합 군사훈련은 오랜 기간 지속된 정례적인 훈련이며 순전히 방어적인 성격을 띄고 있다”고 말했습니다.
또 연합 훈련이 미국과 한국의 안보를 지원한다고 밝혔습니다.
메이너스 대변인은 “미국이 철통같은 미한동맹에 따라 한국의 안보와 미한연합방위태세에 전념하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
미국과 한국은 한국전쟁이 끝난 지난 1953년 10월 1일 상호방위조약을 체결했습니다.
