미 국방부 “칼 차관 한국 방문서 확장억제 강화 진전 부각할 것” 

콜린 칼 미 국방부 정책 차관이 한국과 일본을 방문합니다. 미 국방부는 칼 차관이 한국에서 확장억제 강화에 상당한 진전이 있었음을 부각할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 박동정 기자가 보도합니다.

미 국방부는 11일 콜린 칼 국방 정책 차관이 인도태평양사령부와 한국, 일본을 방문하기 위해 출국했다고 밝혔습니다.

국방부는 이날 보도자료에서 이같이 밝히고 칼 차관이 한국에서는 정부 고위 관리와 카운터파트를 만나고 미한 연합 훈련 등에도 참석할 것이라고 말했습니다.

[국방부 보도자료] “In the Republic of Korea (ROK), he will meet with senior officials and counterparts from the ROK government, visit the Joint Security Area (JSA) within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and attend a U.S.-ROK combined-exercise. Under Secretary Kahl's visit to the ROK will underscore the significant progress made in strengthening extended deterrence under the U.S.-ROK Alliance and emphasize that the U.S. commitment to the defense of the ROK remains ironclad.”

그러면서 “칼 차관의 한국 방문은 미한동맹 하에서 확장억제 강화에 상당한 진전이 있었음을 부각하고, 한국 방어에 대한 미국의 공약이 여전히 철통같다는 점을 강조할 것”이라고 말했습니다.

국방부는 또한 칼 차관이 일본을 방문해 정부 고위 관리와 카운터파트를 만날 예정이라고 말했습니다.

[국방부 보도자료] “During his visit to Japan, Under Secretary Kahl is scheduled to meet with senior officials and counterparts from the Government of Japan. Their discussions will focus on the historic steps taken to strengthen and modernize the U.S.-Japan Alliance, which continues to serve as the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”

이어 양측의 논의는 인도태평양 지역의 평화와 안정의 초석 역할을 계속하고 있는 미일 동맹을 강화하고 현대화하기 위해 취해진 역사적 조치에 초점을 맞출 것이라고 설명했습니다.

국방부는 “칼 차관의 이번 순방이 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양에 대한 우리의 공동 약속을 재확인한다”고 전했습니다.

앞서 패트릭 라이더 국방부 대변인은 지난 8일 브리핑에서 이번 순방 계획을 밝히며 “칼 차관이 인도태평양사령부 고위 군사 지도자들을 만나고 일본과 한국에서는 다양한 카운터파트와 회동해 이 지역에서 우리의 철통같은 동맹과 파트너십을 더욱 강화할 것”이라고 설명했습니다.

[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “Of note, on the heels of Secretary Austin's travel to the Indo-Pacific, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Dr. Colin Kahl will depart this weekend for a series of engagements in Hawaii, Korea and Japan. During the visit, he'll meet with senior INDOPACOM military leaders and conduct various counterpart visits in Japan and Korea that will further strengthen our ironclad alliances and partnerships in the region.”

이런 가운데 한국 국방부는 이종섭 국방장관이 14일 서울에서 칼 차관을 접견한다고 발표했습니다.

전하규 국방부 대변인은 12일 정례브리핑에서 이 장관이 칼 차관과 만날 것이라며 “확장억제 강화 방안 등 한미 정상회담 후속 조치와 관련된 사항을 논의하게 될 것”이라고 말했습니다.
