바이든, ‘한국전 정전일’ 선포…“미한동맹, 세계 평화·번영에 기여할 것”

조 바이든 미국 대통령이 7월 27일을 한국전쟁 참전용사 정전기념일로 선포하며 참전용사들의 희생을 기렸습니다. 특히 70주년을 맞은 미한동맹이 세계 평화와 번영에 기여하도록 노력하자고 강조했습니다. 박형주 기자가 보도합니다.

조 바이든 대통령이 한국전쟁 정전협정 체결일인 27일을 ‘한국전쟁 참전용사 정전기념일’로 선포했습니다.

[포고문] "This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea — an unbreakable bond forged by American and Korean service members who fought side-by-side from 1950 to 1953. These patriots braved dangers and deprivations, facing down war and death in defense of democracy. Today, we remember their service. Together, we honor their sacrifice — including more than 36,000 Americans and more than 7,000 Korean Augmentation to the United States Army soldiers who laid down their lives for a world of greater liberty and freedom.”

바이든 대통령은 26일 발표한 포고문에서 "올해는 미한동맹 70주년이 되는 해"라면서, 이 동맹은 "1950년부터 1953년까지 나란히 참전한 미군과 한국군이 맺은 끊을 수 없는 유대"라고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 "이 애국자들은 민주주의를 수호하기 위해 전쟁과 죽음에 맞서며 위험과 박탈을 무릅쓰고 용감하게 싸웠다"며 "오늘날 우리는 그들의 헌신을 기억한다"고 강조했습니다.

또한 "우리는 자유와 더 자유로운 세상을 위해 목숨을 바친 3만 6천여 명의 미국인과 7천여 명의 한국군 장병 등의 희생을 함께 기린다"고 말했습니다.

바이든 대통령은 이어 윤석열 한국 대통령의 최근 미국 방문 중 함께 한국전 참전용사 기념공원에서 미국과 한국의 참전용사들에게 헌화한 사실을 언급하며 "이는 미한 동맹이 민주주의, 안보, 자유 등 신념을 공유한 데서 비롯됐다는 사실을 엄숙히 상기하는 자리였다"고 밝혔습니다.

[포고문] "During President Yoon’s recent trip to the United States, we visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial — laying wreaths in honor of the brave Korean and American women and men who served and sacrificed. It was a solemn reminder that our Alliance was not born out of shared borders but shared beliefs — including democracy, security, and freedom. Today, those beliefs are upheld by the thousands of Korean and American troops who continue to stand together on the Korean Peninsula. And they remain the source of our shared strength — keeping the Alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States the linchpin of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and, increasingly, around the world."

그러면서 "이러한 신념은 오늘날 한반도에 함께 주둔하고 있는 수천 명의 한국군과 미군에 의해 지켜지고 있다"며 이러한 신념은 미한 동맹을 인도태평양 지역, 더 나아가 전 세계의 평화, 안정, 번영의 핵심축으로 유지하는 미한 공동의 힘의 원천으로 남아 있다"고 강조했습니다.

바이든 대통령은 또한 정전협정 체결 70주년을 맞아 "오늘날 우리가 누리고 있는 안보와 안정을 지키기 위해 싸웠던 한국전 참전용사들을 기린다"며 "그들이 헌신하고 희생한 민주적 가치에 대한 우리의 헌신을 새롭게 하자"고 말했습니다.

아울러 "한국과의 동맹이 세계 평화와 번영에 지속적으로 기여할 수 있도록 함께 노력하자"고 덧붙였습니다.

바이든 대통령은 이어 이날을 맞아 "모든 미국인들이 한국전 참전용사들의 강인함, 희생, 사명감을 되돌아보고 그들에게 마땅히 받아야 할 높은 영예를 수여할 것을 권장한다"고 말했습니다.

미국 대통령은 해마다 7월 27일을 한국전쟁 참전용사 정전협정 기념일로 선포하는 포고문을 발표해 왔습니다.
