미국 합참의장이 북한의 계속되는 탄도미사일 실험과 핵무기 개발이 제기하는 위협을 경고했습니다. 미국 국방장관은 한국에 대한 확장 억제 공약을 강조하며 북한의 어떤 도발에도 즉각 대응할 수 있다고 밝혔습니다. 이조은 기자입니다.
마크 밀리 미 합참의장은 28일 “북한의 지속적인 탄도미사일 실험과 핵무기 개발이 미 본토와 동맹 및 파트너 국가들에게 위협을 가하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취:밀리 의장] “North Korea’s continued ballistic missile testing and nuclear weapons development pose threats to our homeland and our allies and partners. But we stand together shoulder to shoulder with ROK to deter North Korean aggression as we have for seven decades.”
밀리 의장은 이날 상원 군사위원회의 2024회계연도 국방 예산 심의 청문회에서 이같이 밝히며 “그러나 우리는 70년간 그랬듯이 북한의 공격을 억지하기 위해 한국과 어깨를 나란히 하고 있다”고 말했습니다.
로이드 오스틴 미 국방장관은 이날 청문회에 제출한 서면보고에서 “한국과 일본에 대한 우리의 확장 억제 공약은 변함없고 철통같이 유지되고 있다”며 “우리는 북한의 어떤 도발에도 신속하고 단호하게 대응할 수 있는 능력을 계속해서 보여주고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
[오스틴 장관] “We remain steadfast and ironclad in our extended deterrence commitments to the ROK and Japan, and we continue to demonstrate our ability to respond rapidly and firmly to any DPRK provocation. We are working to strengthen and modernize our alliances with the ROK and Japan and will continue to ensure that our forces in and around the Korean Peninsula are ready to “Fight Tonight” in the event of DPRK aggression.”
이어 “우리는 한국, 일본과의 동맹을 강화하고 현대화하기 위해 노력하고 있다”며 “북한의 공격이 있을 경우 한반도와 그 주변의 미군이 ‘오늘 밤 싸울’ 준비가 돼 있도록 계속 보장할 것”이라고 말했습니다.
오스틴 장관은 또 “우리는 북한, 이란, 그리고 세계 테러 조직들의 진전되고 끊임없이 지속되는 위협에 대해 경계를 늦추지 않고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
[오스틴 장관] “We remain vigilant against the advanced and persistent threats from the DPRK, Iran, and global terrorist organizations. We continue to shore up security on the Korean Peninsula despite the DPRK’s provocations, including through bilateral and trilateral cooperation. We will continue to stand with our Allies, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan.
이어 “우리는 북한의 도발에도 불구하고 양자 및 3자 협력 등을 통해 한반도의 안보를 계속해서 강화하고 있다”며 “우리는 계속해서 동맹인 한국, 일본과 함께할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
한편 밀리 의장은 중국의 타이완 침공 시 인도태평양 지역 동맹 및 파트너 국가들이 타이완 방어를 도울 것으로 보느냐는 질문에 “방식은 다르겠지만 그럴 것으로 생각한다”며 “전부 전투 병력이나 그런 종류의 것들은 아닐 것”이라고 답했습니다.
[녹취:밀리 의장] “I think in different ways, yes, perhaps not all with combat forces and that sort of thing…we have a series of bilateral defense treaties that were ratified by the by the Senate, and those are ironclad with the Republic of Korea, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Australia. These are treaties that we are committed to fight on their behalf, that sort of thing. So I think we have a network of allies and partners that gives us a strategic advantage over China or Russia for that matter.”
밀리 의장은 이어 “우리는 한국, 일본, 필리핀, 태국, 호주와 상원이 비준한 양자 방위 조약을 맺고 있고 그것들은 철통같다”며 “우리가 그들을 위해 싸우기로 약속한 조약들”이라고 말했습니다.
그러면서 “우리는 중국이나 러시아보다 전략적으로 우위에 설 수 있는 동맹과 파트너 네트워크를 갖고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
