미국 국무부는 고고도 미사일 방어체계, 사드 배치를 둘러싼 한국과 중국 간 긴장이 완화된 것과 관련해, 두 나라가 가까운 관계를 갖게 된 것을 환영한다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “We certainly welcome that China and the Republic of Korea would have a close relationship. We tend to think that is a good thing for the region and especially regional instability and the worldwide instability that the DPRK poses-that the threat they pose.”
헤더 노어트 국무부 대변인은 31일 정례브리핑에서 이는 역내에 좋은 일이라며, 북한이 역내와 전 세계에 가하는 불안정에 특히 그렇다고 말했습니다.
이어 미국의 사드 관련 입장은 변한 게 없다며, 이는 미국과 한국이 동맹으로서 내린 결정이라는 점을 거듭 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “In terms of THAAD, nothing has changed from our position on that. It was an alliance decision on the part of the U.S. and the Republic of Korea. Something we came to do together as you all know it’s the defensive mechanism, it’s not something that offensive. One of our priorities is not only keeping our own people safe, but keeping our allies safe.”
사드는 공격이 아닌 방어 체계이고, 미국은 자국민의 안전뿐 아니라 동맹의 안전을 지키는 것 역시 최우선 순위에 둔다는 설명입니다.
노어트 대변인은 북한이 중국뿐 아니라 많은 나라에 가시 같은 존재라는 것을 중국이 깨달아가는 것 같다고 말했습니다.

앞서 한국과 중국은 이날 사드의 한국 배치를 둘러싼 양국 간 갈등을 해소하고 양국 관계를 정상화하기로 합의했다고 발표했습니다.
