펜스 “미북 회담, 북한의 비핵화 약속 도출…신뢰하되 검증할 것”

마이크 펜스 부통령은 미-북 정상회담은 북한 지도자가 완전한 비핵화를 약속하는 결과로 이어졌다고 밝혔습니다. 지금은 합의 이행을 위해 활발한 협상을 진행해야 한다면서 신뢰하지만 검증한다는 마음을 갖고 임할 것이라고 말했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.

펜스 부통령은 이번 미-북 회담이 직접적이고 정직했으며, 도발적이고 생산적이었다고 평가했습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “The President went to this meeting as, in his words, “on a mission of peace,” but with eyes wide open. And I can report, the meeting that took place was direct and honest, provocative, and productive. It resulted in a bold first step where North Korea’s leader committed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. “

펜스 부통령은 13일 텍사스주에서 열린 남부 침례교 연례 행사에 참석해, 트럼프 대통령은 평화의 임무를 수행하지만 경계를 늦추지 않는 마음으로 이번 회담에 임했다고 말했습니다.

이어 이번 회담은 북한의 지도자가 한반도의 완전한 비핵화를 약속하는 대담한 첫 단계라는 결과로 이어졌다고 설명했습니다.

아울러 미-북 회담에서 이뤄진 합의 중 한국전쟁 참전용사의 아들로서 매우 큰 의미가 있었던 것은 트럼프 대통령이 한국전쟁에서 숨진 5천 명 이상의 미군 실종자 유해의 송환 약속을 받아낸 점이라고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “And among the agreements reached, very deeply meaningful to me as the son of a combat veteran from the Korean War, President Trump secured a commitment from North Korea to recover and repatriate the remains of more than 5,000 American MIAs who fell in the Korean War. We are finally going to bring our boys home.”

마침내 이들을 집으로 데려올 것이라는 겁니다.

그러면서 지금은 트럼프 대통령이 말했듯 가능한 빨리 합의를 이행하기 위해 활발한 협상을 할 때라고 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “Now comes “vigorous negotiations to implement the agreement,” as the President said, “as soon as possible.” But make no mistake about it: The success of this summit, and the progress we’ve made, is a direct result of President Trump’s steadfast leadership and the courage of one American family.”

하지만 회담의 성공과 미국이 이뤄낸 진전은 트럼프 대통령의 변함 없는 지도력과 한 미국 가정의 용기의 직접적인 결과라는 점을 확실히 해두겠다고 강조했습니다.

또한 트럼프 대통령은 행정부가 출범하자마자 여러 해 동안 이어진 “전략적 인내”를 끝내고 대북 정책을 바꿨다고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “From the outset of our administration, President Trump changed our policy toward North Korea, ending years of what was known as “strategic patience.” The President brought unprecedented economic and diplomatic sanctions to bear on North Korea, and he used the kind of tough rhetoric, in South Korea and at the United Nations, that communicated America’s resolve to protect our country and stand with our allies.”

트럼프 대통령은 북한에 대해 전례 없는 경제적, 외교적 제재를 가했고 한국과 유엔에서 강력한 수사를 사용해 미국을 지키고 동맹과 함께 하겠다는 미국의 결의를 전달했다는 겁니다.

펜스 부통령은 또 트럼프 대통령이 이날 자신에게 미국에 억류됐다 풀려난 뒤 숨진 미국 대학생 오토 웜비어 가족을 언급해 달라고 부탁했다고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “The President would also, today, though, want me to give credit to the family of Otto Warmbier. As the President said last week in the Rose Garden, Otto was a “brilliant, beautiful… young man.” And in the words of his family’s tradition, may his memory be a blessing.”

그러면서 트럼프 대통령이 지난 주 오토 웜비어를 총명하고 아름다운 젊은 청년이라고 불렀던 것을 상기시켰습니다.

이어 그의 죽음은 미국의 심장을 슬프게 한 비극이었지만 웜비어 부모의 용기는 미국이 지금과 같은 중요한 단계에 오도록 도왔다고 설명했습니다.

이어 진실은 이들 부모의 사례와 “힘을 통한 평화”를 믿어온 트럼프 대통령이 미국을 지금 이 단계에 오도록 했다는 점이라고 말했습니다.

And as we move forward with further negotiations, we now will “trust but verify.” And as the President said, our “sanctions will remain in place” until North Korea’s nuclear weapons are “no longer a factor.” We will not repeat the mistakes of the past.“

아울러 추가 협상으로 진전을 이룬다면 미국은 이제 “신뢰하지만 검증할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

또한 트럼프 대통령 말처럼 북한의 핵무기가 더 이상 문제가 되지 않을 때까지 제재는 유지될 것이라고 설명했습니다. 과거의 실수를 반복하지 않는다는 겁니다.

펜스 부통령은 현 시점에서 북한 문제와 관련해 트럼프 대통령이 많은 것을 달성했다는 점을 기억하는 게 중요하다고 말했습니다.

North Korea hasn’t fired a missile test in seven months, historic inter-Korean peace summits have occurred, and three American hostages came home. “

북한은 지난 7개월간 미사일을 한 발도 발사하지 않았고 역사적인 남북한 평화 회담이 열렸으며 (북한에 억류됐던) 세 명의 미국인 인질들이 집으로 돌아왔다는 겁니다.

그러면서 자신은 북한에 인질로 잡혀 있던 세 명의 놀라운 미국인들이 집으로 오는 걸 환영하기 위해 공항을 찾았던 그 날 밤을 평생 잊지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.

이어 이들 미국인들이 작은 메모장에 성경 구절을 적어 미국 정부에 감사를 전했던 일을 상기시키면서 절대 잊지 않을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

펜스 부통령은 앞으로 남은 일들이 많다며 미국의 결의와 용기를 필요로 할 고된 절차가 될 것이라고 설명했습니다.

그러면서 누구든 전쟁을 일으킬 수 있지만 용감한 자만이 평화를 달성할 수 있다는 트럼프 대통령의 발언을 상기시켰습니다.
