‘북한자유주간’을 맞아 미국 상원 외교위 동아태 소위원장이 북한 주민들을 위로했습니다. 이들이 자국민의 안위보다 핵무기를 더 중시하는 김정은 정권에 맞서고 있다고 말했습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.
민주당의 에드워드 마키 상원의원은 “우리는 북한자유주간을 맞아 억압적인 김정은 정권에 맞서고 있는 북한 주민들의 회복력을 인식한다”고 말했습니다.
[마키 의원] “This North Korea Freedom Week, we recognize the resilience of the North Korean people in standing up to the repressive Kim regime, which time and time again has shown it cares more about nuclear weapons than the health and well-being of its people.”
마키 의원은 22일 VOA에 ‘북한자유주간’과 관련해 “김정은 정권은 자국민의 건강과 행복보다 핵무기를 더 중시한다는 것을 여러 차례 보여줬다”면서 이렇게 말했습니다.
올해로 19회를 맞은 북한자유주간은 25일부터 한 주간 이어집니다.
북한자유주간은 미국 내 북한 인권 단체인 북한자유연합과 해외 탈북민 단체들에 의해 2004년부터 시작됐습니다.
앞서 공화당의 마르코 루비오 상원의원도 지난 20일 VOA에 보낸 북한자유주간 관련 성명에서 “김정은 정권은 북한 주민들의 권리를 계속 박탈하고 역내 평화와 안정에 큰 위협이 되고 있다”며 “북한에서 자유라는 대의를 위해 용감하게 싸우는 이들을 응원한다”고 말했습니다.
[루비오 의원] “The Kim Jong Un regime continues to deprive the North Korean people of their rights and presents a massive threat to peace and stability in the region. I commend those who continue to bravely fight on behalf of the cause of freedom in North Korea. Your struggle and sacrifices do not go unnoticed.”
그러면서 “이들의 투쟁과 희생을 간과하지 않고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
민주당의 팀 케인 상원의원도 이날 VOA에 “북한자유주간을 맞아 우리는 모든 사람이 자유와 정의, 번영을 누릴 자격이 있음을 다시 한번 생각하게 된다”고 말했습니다.
[케인 의원] “On North Korea Freedom Week, we are reminded that all people are deserving of freedom, justice, and prosperity. However, North Koreans today continue to have their most basic freedoms denied – a violation of the values enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As a proud champion of human rights, I remain deeply committed to strengthening the dignity and rights of the North Korean people.”
그러나 “오늘날 북한 주민들은 가장 기본적인 자유를 계속 거부당하고 있다”며 “이는 유엔의 세계인권선언에 명시된 가치에 위배된다”고 지적했습니다.
케인 의원은 또 “나는 자랑스러운 인권 투사로서 북한 주민의 존엄성과 권리를 강화하는 데 깊이 전념하고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
