미 국방부는 한국 대통령의 핵무장 가능성 언급과 관련해 한반도의 완전한 비핵화가 여전히 미국의 정책 목표라고 밝혔습니다. 미국의 핵우산이 잘 작동하고 있다는 점도 강조했습니다. 박동정 기자가 보도합니다.
패트릭 라이더 미 국방부 대변인은12일 윤석열 한국 대통령의 자체 핵무장 가능성 언급과 관련해 “우리의 정책은 여전히 한반도의 완전한 비핵화에 초점이 맞춰져 있다”고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “I've seen the the press reports on that. It's really something for the Republic of Korea to address I would tell you that from a US standpoint, our policy continues to remain focused on the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. And I'm working as always with ROK, Japanese and allies in the region, to preserve security and stability, and importantly, to deter aggression from countries like North Korea, as we've said before, and as you know, we have nearly 30,000 US forces stationed in South Korea alone that are focused on supporting and defending our ROK allies. So our commitment towards this end remains ironclad.”
라이더 대변인은 이날 브리핑에서 윤 대통령의 핵무장 관련 발언에 대한 논평 요청에 관련 보도를 봤다며 이같이 답했습니다.
그러면서 “우리는 안보와 안정을 수호하고 북한과 같은 나라들의 공격을 저지하기 위해 한국, 일본, 그리고 역내 동맹국들과 항상 협력하고 있다”고 말했습니다.
이어 “동맹국인 한국을 지원하고 방어하는 데 초점을 맞춘 약 3만 명의 주한미군이 있다”며 “따라서 이 목표를 향한 우리의 공약은 철통같다”고 강조했습니다.
라이더 대변인은 ‘북한과 중국, 러시아 모두 핵무기를 보유하고 있는데 한국은 왜 안 되느냐’는 질문에 “이 문제는 잠재적인 핵무기 사용 가능성을 방지한다는 점에서 핵무기 비확산, 그리고 역내 안보와 안정과 관련이 있다”고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “Again, a lot of this has to do with the fact from a regional security and stability standpoint and nonproliferation in terms of preventing the potential chance for the use of nuclear weapons and so from a United States perspective, again, our policy remains very clear on denuclearization. But it's important also to remember that the Republic of Korea falls under that extended deterrence umbrella. And so, in addition to the US forces that are assigned there on the peninsula, our allies in the region to include South Korea are part of that.”
라이더 대변인은 “미국의 관점에서 볼 때 우리의 정책은 비핵화에 대해 매우 명확하다”며 “하지만 또한 한국이 미국의 확장억제 우산 안에 있다는 것을 기억하는 것도 중요하다”고 말했습니다.
‘만약 미국의 핵우산이 작동하지 않을 경우에는 어떻게 하느냐’는 질문에는 가정적인 질문이라고 지적하며 “지금까지 매우 잘 작동해왔다”고 말했습니다.

앞서 윤석열 한국 대통령은 11일 국방부와 외교부 신년 업무보고 자리에서 핵무기 개발 등 북한의 도발과 안보 위협에 대응한 자체 핵무장 가능성을 언급했습니다.
[녹취: 윤석열 대통령] “물론 이제 더 문제가 심각해져 가지고 여기 대한민국에 전술핵 배치를 한다든지 우리 자신이 자체 핵을 보유할 수도 있습니다.”
한국 대통령실은 12일 윤 대통령 발언에 대해 “북 핵 위협에 단호하게 대응해야 한다는 원론적인 입장을 밝힌 것”이라며 “핵확산금지조약(NPT) 체제를 준수한다는 원칙에 변함이 없다”고 말했습니다.
