오소프 상원의원, 바이든에 ‘윤석열 국빈 방문 초청 촉구’ 서한

미국 민주당 상원의원이 바이든 대통령에게 서한을 보내 한국 윤석열 대통령의 국빈 방문 초청을 촉구했습니다. 한국 대통령의 국빈 초청은 미한 양국이 함께 이룬 진전을 조명하는 기회가 될 것이라고 강조했습니다. 이조은 기자입니다.

조지아주의 존 오소프 민주당 상원의원이 최근 조 바이든 대통령에게 윤석열 한국 대통령이 국빈 자격으로 미국을 방문하도록 초청할 것을 촉구하는 서한을 보낸 것으로 확인됐습니다.

오소프 의원실이 9일 VOA에 공개한 이 서한은 지난 2일자로 바이든 대통령에게 발송됐습니다.

오소프 의원은 서한에서 “올해 미국과 한국은 동맹 70주년을 기념할 것”이라며 “윤 대통령의 국빈 방문은 이 역사적인 행사를 기념하고 미한 동맹에 대한 미국의 지속적인 의지를 보여줄 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

[서한] This year, the United States and the ROK will celebrate the 70th anniversary of our alliance. Investing President Yoon for a State Visit will honor this historic occasion and demonstrate the United States' enduring commitment to the alliance…The United States and the ROK share core values of commitment to democracy and rule of law, respect for human rights, and belief in private sector-led growth.”

이어 “미국과 한국은 민주주의와 법치에 대한 의지, 인권 존중, 민간 주도의 성장에 대한 믿음이라는 핵심 가치를 공유하고 있다”고 말했습니다.

그러면서 “(윤 대통령의) 국빈 방문은 바이든 대통령이 지난해 5월 한국을 방문했을 때 우리의 상호 안보를 증진하고 경제 및 기술 협력을 강화하기 위해 한 약속을 강화할 이상적인 기회를 제공할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

[서한] “A State Visit presents an ideal opportunity to reinforce commitments made during your visit to the ROK in May 2022 to advance our mutual security and strengthen our economic and technological cooperation. Threats posed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s multiple launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles and the People's Republic of China (PRK)'s aggressive behavior in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea make clear the continuing need for strong U.S.-ROK security cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific region.”

또 “여러 차례에 걸친 북한의 대륙간탄도미사일 발사와 타이완 해협과 남중국해에서 중국의 공격적인 행동이 제기하는 위협은 한반도와 인도태평양 지역에서 강력한 미한 안보 협력의 지속적인 필요성을 분명히 하고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.

오소프 의원은 2021년 한국을 방문해 정재계 대표들을 만난 점도 언급하며 “나의 관여 결과 한국 경제계는 우리 경제를 탈바꿈시키고 화석연료에 대한 의존도를 줄이는 목표를 달성하는 데 도움을 주는 열렬한 파트너가 됐다”고 밝혔습니다.

[서한] “As a result of my engagement, the Korean business community has been an eager partner to help achieve the goal of transforming our economy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Korean companies are helping to put Georgia on the leading edge of the United States' transition to renewable energy, creating good jobs in the state of Georgia, and demonstrating the extraordinary possibilities of our economic partnership…As the security, cultural, and economic ties between our two countries continue to strengthen, inviting President Yoon for the first State Visit by a South Korean president since 2011 will highlight the progress we have made together and reinforce the ROK's position as an invaluable partner.”

또 “한국 기업들은 미국이 재생에너지로 전환하는 데 있어서 조지아주가 선도적인 입지에 있도록 도움을 주고 있으며 조지아주에서 좋은 일자리를 창출하는 한편 우리 경제적 파트너십의 엄청난 가능성도 보여주고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.

그러면서 “양국의 안보, 문화, 경제적 유대가 지속적으로 강화되는 가운데 미국이2011년 이후 한국 대통령으로는 처음으로 윤석열 대통령을 국빈 초청한다면 우리가 함께 이룬 진전을 조명하고 소중한 동반자로서의 한국의 위치를 강화할 것”이라고 말했습니다.
