줄리 터너 북한인권특사가 이번 주 한국을 방문한다고 미국 국무부가 밝혔습니다.
국무부는 8일 보도자료에서 터너 특사가 10일부터 13일까지 서울을 방문한다며 “터너 대사는 14일 탈북민의 날(북한이탈주민의 날)을 앞두고 ‘2024 북한인권 서울포럼’에 참석하고 정부 관리들, 시민사회단체, 업계 단체들과 만나 공급망 실사 및 강제노동에 대해 논의할 예정”이라고 밝혔습니다.
[국무부 보도자료] “Ahead of North Korea Defectors’ Day (July 14), Ambassador Turner will participate in the Seoul Forum on North Korean Human Rights and meet with government officials, civil society organizations, and industry groups to discuss supply chain due diligence and forced labor. She will highlight the United States’ commitment to support the North Korean defector and escapee community, advance a survivor-centered approach to accountability for North Korea’s human rights violations and abuses, and underscore the unique role escapees play in exposing the regime’s human rights violations and abuses.”
국무부는 이어 “터너 대사는 탈북민과 탈북민 커뮤니티에 대한 미국의 지원 의지를 강조하고, 북한의 인권 침해와 학대에 대한 책임규명을 위해 생존자 중심의 접근 방식을 진전시키며, 북한 정권의 인권 침해와 학대를 폭로하는 데 있어 탈북민들의 고유한 역할을 강조할 것”이라고 덧붙였습니다.
그러면서 “탈북민들은 북한 주민들이 자유 안에서 살 때 무엇을 성취할 수 있을지 보여주는 살아있는 증거”라면서 “미국은 한국을 포함한 동맹국들과 이들의 목소리를 확대하기 위해 계속 협력할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
[국무부] “North Korean escapees are a living testament to what is achievable for North Koreans living in freedom. The United States will continue to work with our allies, including the Republic of Korea, to amplify their voices.”
한국 정부와 지자체는 오는 14일 북한이탈주민의 날을 맞아 다양한 행사를 개최할 예정입니다.
앞서 서울시는 오는 11일 북한인권조사위원회(COI) 보고서 발간 10주년과 북한이탈주민의 날 제정을 기념하는 ‘2024 북한인권 서울포럼’을 개최한다며, 터너 특사와 엘리자베스 살몬 유엔 북한인권특별보고관 등이 참석할 예정이라고 밝혔습니다.
