미국 국무부는 줄리 터너 북한인권특사와 베스 반 샤크 국제형사사법 특사가 7일부터 11일까지 한국을 방문한다고 밝혔습니다.
국무부 대변인실은 2일 발표한 보도자료에서 “터너 특사와 반 샤크 특사는 서울에서 북한 인권 침해에 대한 책임 규명에 초점을 맞춘 고위급 전략 워크숍을 공동 주최할 예정”이라고 전했습니다.
[국무부 보도자료] “In Seoul, Ambassador Turner and Ambassador Van Schaack will co-host a high-level strategic workshop focused on accountability for human rights violations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The workshop, organized by the Center for Justice and Accountability and funded by the State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, aims to strengthen global efforts to address these abuses.”
그러면서 “'정의와 책임센터(CJA)’가 주관하고 국무부 국제형사사법 부서가 자금을 지원하는 이 워크숍은 이러한 인권 침해 문제를 해결하기 위한 국제적 노력을 강화하는 데 목적이 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.
아울러 두 특사는 워크숍 외에도 “한국 정부 관계자, 시민사회 지도자, 탈북민들과 만날 예정”이라며 “이 만남을 통해 북한의 인권 침해에 대한 책임을 묻고, 탈북민과 탈북민 커뮤니티를 지원하며, 생존자 중심의 정의 실현을 위한 미국의 의지를 강조할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
[국무부 보도자료] “In addition to the workshop, Ambassadors Turner and Van Schaack will meet with ROK government officials, civil society leaders, and North Korean escapees. These engagements will emphasize the U.S. commitment to holding the DPRK accountable for its human rights violations and abuses, supporting the North Korean defector and escapee community, and advancing a survivor-centered approach to justice. Ambassadors Turner and Van Schaack will also highlight the importance of multilateral cooperation to raise awareness of and address the ongoing human rights abuses in the DPRK.”
두 특사는 북한의 지속적인 인권 침해에 대한 인식을 높이고 이를 해결하기 위한 다자간 협력의 중요성도 강조할 예정입니다.
국무부 대변인실은 “미국은 한국을 포함한 동맹국들과 협력해 탈북민의 목소리를 증폭시키고, 그들의 이야기에 귀 기울이는 노력을 지속하고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.
