노어트 대변인 “한국, 남북회담서 비핵화 다뤄야”

국무부는 긴밀한 동맹인 한국이 북한과 대화하는 것을 지지한다며 남북회담에서 비핵화 문제가 다뤄져야 한다고 밝혔습니다. 미북 정상회담 문제가 남북회담에서 큰 부분을 차지할 것으로 생각한다고 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다

국무부는 오는 남북회담에서 한국이 비핵화 문제를 언급하는 게 매우 중요하다고 밝혔습니다.

[녹취: 노어트 대변인] “I think it is really important for them to do so.”

헤더 노어트 국무부 대변인은 17일 정례브리핑에서 미국은 한국이 남북회담에서 비핵화 문제를 언급하는 것을 촉구하느냐는 질문에 이 같이 답했습니다.

이어 미국과 한국은 긴밀한 동맹이라며 미국은 남북간 대화를 지지한다고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 노어트 대변인] “We are closely latch.. up and allied with Koreans. We support that inter-Korean dialogue, understanding that’s important to people both from the North and the South, to be able to have these conversations, so that’s certainly a significant step.”

한국과 북한이 이런 대화를 가질 수 있다는 것은 남북한 모두에게 중요하다는 것을 이해한다며 이는 확실히 중요한 진전이라는 겁니다.

하지만 남북대화에서 큰 부분을 차지하는 건, 언제 이뤄질지는 모르겠지만 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 간의 회담이 될 것으로 생각한다고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 노어트 대변인] “But we imagine that a big part of that conversation that they have will be our president’s upcoming meeting with Kim Jong Un, whenever that takes place.”

노어트 대변인은 미북 정상회담이 열릴 장소를 묻는 질문에는 현재 논의가 진행되고 있다고 답했습니다.

[녹취: 노어트 대변인] “I think that is all under the discussion right now. The president of course is meeting with PM Abe at Mar-a-Lago right now, that of course in addition to our relationship with Japan, but the DPRK talks will be the hot topic between the president and the prime minister. In terms of where those meetings are held, we are not ready to announce that just yet. When we are I will let you know.”

이어 트럼프 대통령이 아베 신조 일본 총리와 플로리다 마라라고에서 만나고 있다는 점을 상기시킨 뒤 양국 관계뿐만 아니라 북한과의 회담 문제가 중요한 의제가 될 것이라고 설명했습니다.

그러면서 아직 회담 장소에 대해서는 공개할 준비가 돼 있지 않다며 준비가 됐을 때 공개하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.

노어트 대변인은 또 존 설리번 국무장관 대행이 이날 플로리다를 방문해 트럼프 대통령과 아베 총리와의 회담에 참여할 것이라고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 노어트 대변인] “Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan traveled to Mar-a-Lago Florida today and that is where he will join president Trump for his meetings with PM Shinzo Abe of Japan. The acting secretary will support the president as the United States and Japan seek to strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance, the cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region, and continue their close coordination on the global maximum pressure campaign toward the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.”

이어 설리번 장관 대행은 미국과 일본이 인도.태평양 지역의 평화와 안보의 핵심인 양국간 동맹을 강화하고, 완전하고 검증 가능하며 되돌릴 수 없는 한반도 비핵화를 향한 전세계의 최대 압박 캠페인에 대한 긴밀한 협력을 지속하는 것과 관련해 트럼프 대통령을 지원할 것이라고 노어트 대변인은 밝혔습니다.
