펜스 “트럼프, 북한 비핵화와 모든 미군유해 송환 약속 이끌어내”

마이크 펜스 부통령이 북한의 미군 유해 송환을 이끌어낸 트럼프 대통령의 노력을 거듭 부각시켰습니다. 미-북 정상회담을 통해 비핵화와 유해 송환을 모두 약속 받았다고 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.

펜스 부통령은 트럼프 대통령 덕분에 한국전쟁에서 전사한 미군들이 집으로 돌아오고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “Many of you saw it, it was in June, the historic summit, President Trump sat down for the negotiations with the leader of North Korea. And while he secured the commitment for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump also had our missing fallen on his heart, and he secured the commitment of the return of the remains of all MIA service members from the Korean War. Thanks to our President Donald Trump, our boys are coming home.”

펜스 부통령은 오하이오주 신시내티에서 행한 연설에서, 트럼프 대통령이 지난 6월 열린 역사적인 미-북 정상회담에서 북한의 지도자와 마주앉아 한반도의 완전한 비핵화 약속뿐만 아니라 한국전쟁에 참전했던 모든 미군 전사자와 실종자 유해의 송환 약속을 받아냈다고 강조했습니다.

아울러 트럼프 대통령은 회담 당시 미군 실종자와 전사자를 마음에 품고 있었다고 말했습니다.

이어 한국전쟁 참전용사의 아들로서 몇 주 전 하와이로 미군 유해가 돌아오는 행사에 대통령을 대신해 참석했던 것보다 더 큰 영광은 없을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “And for this son of the combat veteran from the Korean War, I will tell you, I told the President this, he will probably never give me a greater honor than representing him at the first homecoming ceremony of our soldiers in Hawaii just few short weeks ago. It was deeply inspired and as the President said yesterday at the Fort Drum here in this great nation we stand for the principle that we stand with all of those who serve and have served and we leave no one behind.

또한 당시 행사에서 큰 영감을 받았다고 덧붙였습니다.

그러면서 트럼프 대통령의 전날 발언처럼 미국이라는 위대한 국가는 미국을 위해 복무하거나 복무했던 모든 이들과 함께할 것이고 ‘단 한 명도 (전장에) 남겨두지 않는다’는 원칙을 지킬 것이라고 강조했습니다.

앞서 트럼프 대통령은 전날 포트 드럼 육군 기지를 방문해 2019 회계연도 국방수권법안 서명에 앞서 행한 연설에서 이 같은 원칙을 강조한 바 있습니다.
