미 국무부는 한반도의 완전한 비핵화라는 궁극적인 목표를 진전시키기 위해 미국, 한국, 일본 3자 간 긴밀한 협력을 지속하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 또 북한에 대해서는 건설적 외교에 관여할 준비가 돼 있다는 점을 알렸다고 밝혔습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
네드 프라이스 국무부 대변인은 15일 전화 브리핑에서 미한일 삼각 공조의 중요성을 강조했습니다.
프라이스 대변인은 문재인 한국 대통령과 기시다 후미오 일본 총리 간 15일 전화통화와 내주 예정된 것으로 알려진 미한일 북 핵 수석대표 회동에 대한 질문에 이같이 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “Part of our strategy when it comes to the DPRK is to work closely with our allies and partners to work in lockstep with our allies and partners towards our ultimate objective. And that is the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. That is why we have put such a premium on our coordination, on our consultation with our Japanese allies and our allies from the Republic of Korea. You probably recall that the first physical trip that Secretary Blinken took upon his confirmation in his job was to Japan and the Republic of Korea. He was accompanied by the Secretary of Defense, where we met jointly with our foreign minister and counterparts and the minister of defense counterparts as well in a two plus two format in Japan and South Korea.”
프라이스 대변인은 “북한 문제와 관련한 우리 전략의 일부는 한반도의 완전한 비핵화라는 궁극적인 목표를 향해 우리의 동맹과 파트너와 긴밀히 협력하고 보조를 맞추는 것”이라고 말했습니다.
이어 “그렇기 때문에 우리는 동맹인 일본, 한국과의 조율, 협의에 그토록 중요한 가치를 부여하는 것”이라며 토니 블링컨 국무장관이 취임 후 국방장관과 함께 첫 해외 순방국으로 찾은곳이 한국과 일본이었다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “But we’re also committed to the trilateral relationship knowing just how important it is. And we’ve had any number of opportunities to meet with our Republic of Korea and Japanese counterparts in a trilateral format. In fact, the Secretary did that just the other week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. He had done that on other travels as well. Special Representative Sung Kim has done the same with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts. I don’t have any meetings to announce at this time but suffice to say that we continue to work closely on a bilateral basis as well as on a trilateral basis with our Japanese and South Korean counterparts to advance that ultimate policy objective.”
프라이스 대변인은 미국이 미한일 삼자 관계를 매우 중시하고 있으며, 블링컨 장관과 성 김 대북 특별대표가 일본과 한국 측 당국자들과 자주 만나고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
프라이스 대변인은 “지금 시점에서 발표할 회동 일정은 없다”면서도 “우리는 (한반도 비핵화)라는 궁극적인 목표를 진전시키기 위해 일본, 한국과 양자 차원과 3자 차원에서 계속 긴밀히 협력하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.

미국이 북한에 어떤 구체적인 제안을 했느냐는 질문에 대해 프라이스 대변인은 “우리가 자세히 밝힐 수 있는 위치에 있지 않다”면서도 “우리가 메시지에서 명백히 밝힌 것은 건설적인 외교에 관여할 준비가 돼 있고 의지가 있다는 점”이라고 말했습니다.
