미국과 중국의 북핵 수석대표가 5일 미국에서 만나 최근 북한의 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 발사 등 북한 문제를 논의했습니다.
[네드 프라이스 대변인] “On April 5 Special Representative for the DPRK Sung Kim met with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming in Washington, D.C., to discuss recent developments in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).”
미 국무부는 이날 네드 프라이스 대변인 명의로 발표한 성명에서 성 김 대북특별대표가 워싱턴 DC에서 류사오밍 중국 한반도사무특별대표를 만났다고 밝혔습니다.
그러면서 성 김 대표가 이날 회동에서 지난달 24일 북한의 ICBM 발사를 규탄했다고 말했습니다.
[네드 프라이스 대변인] “Special Representative Kim condemned the DPRK’s March 24 ICBM launch, the latest in a series of increasingly escalatory actions by the DPRK. He noted that each of the DPRK’s 13 ballistic missile launches this year constituted clear violations of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and posed a serious threat to regional stability, and reiterated the importance of responding firmly to these escalatory actions.
이어 김 대표는 올해 북한의 13차례 탄도미사일 발사가 다수의 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의에 대한 명백한 위반이자 역내 안정에 대한 심각한 위협이라고 지적하고, 긴장을 고조시키는 이런 행동들에 단호하게 대응하는 것이 중요하다고 재차 강조했다고 전했습니다.
아울러 김 대표는 미국이 북한과의 진지하고 지속적인 외교에 관여하는데 전념할 것임을 재확인했다고 프라이스 대변인은 밝혔습니다.
[네드 프라이스 대변인] “Special Representative Kim reaffirmed that the United States is committed to engage in serious and sustained diplomacy with the DPRK. Special Representative Kim and Special Representative Liu discussed opportunities to advance our shared goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and how to encourage the DPRK to engage in meaningful negotiations.”
프라이스 대변인은 김 대표와 류 대표가 한반도 비핵화라는 공동 목표를 진전시킬 기회와 북한이 의미 있는 협상에 참여하도록 독려하는 방안을 논의했다고 설명했습니다.
앞서 김 대표는 전날(4일) 워싱턴을 방문한 노규덕 한국 외교부 한반도평화교섭본부장과 회담을 하고 북한의 최근 ICBM 발사를 강력히 규탄했습니다. 특히 양측은 북한 미사일 발사에 대한 양국의 공동 대응의 중요성을 강조하면서 유엔 안보리 차원의 새 결의를 추진할 뜻을 밝혔습니다.
