카멀라 해리스 미국 부통령과 기시다 후미오 일본 총리가 첫 양자 회담에서 북한의 탄도미사일 발사를 규탄했습니다. 양측은 일본인 납북자 문제 해결의 중요성에 대해서도 논의했습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.
일본을 방문 중인 카멀라 해리스 미 부통령이 26일 도쿄에서 기시다 후미오 일본 총리와 만나 북한 문제를 비롯한 양국 현안을 논의했습니다.
백악관은 이날 보도자료를 통해 양측이 “북한의 최근 탄도미사일 발사를 규탄하고 북한의 핵과 탄도미사일 프로그램이 제기하는 위협을 해소하기 위해 협력하기로 약속했다”고 전했습니다.
[백악관 보도자료] “The leaders condemned recent ballistic missile launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and pledged to work together to address the threats posed by DPRK’s nuclear and ballistic weapons program. They discussed the importance of resolving the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by the DPRK.”
앞서 북한은 해리스 부통령의 일본 도착 전날인 25일 동해상으로 단거리 탄도미사일을 발사했습니다.
백악관에 따르면 해리스 부통령과 기시다 총리는 이날 회담에서 일본인 납북자 문제 해결의 중요성에 대해서도 논의했습니다.
또 “해리스 부통령은 공동의 안보 우려를 고려한 미한일 3국 공조의 이점을 강조했으며 보다 긴밀한 한일 양국 관계를 향한 진전을 환영했다”고 백악관은 전했습니다.
[백악관 보도자료] “The Vice President underscored the benefits of U.S-Japan-Republic of Korea trilateral cooperation given our shared security concerns and welcomed progress toward closer Japan-Republic of Korea bilateral ties.”
백악관은 “해리스 부통령이 미일 동맹은 인도태평양 지역 평화와 안정의 초석이라고 강조했다”며 “양측은 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양을 증진하기 위한 노력에 대해 논의했다”고 밝혔습니다.
[백악관 보도자료] “The Vice President underscored that the U.S.-Japan Alliance is the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, and they discussed efforts to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. The Vice President reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to Japan’s defense. They discussed the People’s Republic of China’s recent aggressive and irresponsible provocations in the Taiwan Strait, and reaffirmed the importance of preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
백악관은 “해리스 부통령이 미국의 굳건한 일본 방위 의지를 재확인했다”고 강조했습니다.
이어 양측은 “타이완 해협에서 최근 이뤄지는 중국의 공격적이고 무책임한 도발에 대해 논의하고, 타이완 해협의 평화와 안정을 유지하는 것의 중요성을 재확인했다”고 밝혔습니다.
해리스 부통령은 이날 회담에 앞선 모두발언에서 “미일 동맹은 우리가 인도태평양 지역 평화와 안정, 번영에 필수적이라고 믿는 것의 초석”이라고 말했습니다.
[녹취:해리스 부통령] “The alliance between Japan and the United States is a cornerstone of what we believe is integral to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. And, it is something we prioritize because we also believe it is in the best interest of the American people in terms of their security and prosperity and we do believe the same for the Japanese people.”
이어 “우리는 그것이 미국인의 안보와 번영에 있어서도 최선의 이익이며 일본인들에게도 마찬가지라고 믿기 때문에 우선시하는 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
해리스 부통령은 27일 도쿄에서 열리는 아베 신조 전 일본 총리 국장에 참석하기 위해 미국 측 조문단을 이끌고 일본을 방문했습니다.
해리스 부통령은 아베 전 총리 국장에 참석하는 한덕수 한국 총리와 27일 만나고, 이어 29일 서울을 방문해 윤석열 한국 대통령과 회담을 가질 예정입니다.
