노르웨이 “북한 해커 탈취한 암호화폐 압수…핵무기 개발 전용될 뻔”

노르웨이 정부가 북한 해킹조직이 탈취한 암호화폐 중 일부를 추적해 압수 조치했다고 밝혔습니다. 북한 핵무기 프로그램 개발에 전용될 뻔했던 자금이라며 이를 차단하는 것이 중요하다고 강조했습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.

노르웨이의 범죄 수사기구인 ‘외코크림(Økokrim)’은 북한이 지난해 탈취한 암호화폐 자산의 자금 흐름을 추적해 6천만 노르웨이 크로네, 미화로 590만 달러어치를 압류했다고 밝혔습니다.

[외코크림 대변인실] “Økokrim has seized almost NOK 60 million in cryptocurrency. This is the largest amount of cryptocurrency ever seized by the Norwegian police. The seizure was made in the course of Økokrim's investigation of the digital attack against the company Sky Mavis and its game Axie Infinity.”

외코크림 대변인실은 17일 VOA에 “이는 노르웨이 경찰이 압수한 암호화폐 자금 중 최대 규모”라면서, 이번 압류 조치는 지난해 블록체인 기반 게임 ‘엑시 인피니티’ 등에 대한 디지털 공격을 조사하는 과정에서 이뤄졌다고 전했습니다. “지난해3월 약 50억 노르웨이 크로네 상당의 암호화폐 자산이 해당 게임에서 도난당했으며, 미국 연방수사국(FBI)에 따르면 북한 해킹조직 라자루스가 도난의 배후였다”는 설명입니다.

[외코크림 대변인실] “In March 2022, approx. NOK 5 billion in cryptocurrency was stolen from the game. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the North Korean hacker group Lazarus was behind the theft. Immediately after the attack, the group started a massive money laundering operation using very sophisticated methods, that is still ongoing.”

그러면서 “이 조직은 해당 탈취 사건 직후 매우 정교한 방법을 사용해 대규모 자금 세탁을 시작했으며, 이러한 작업은 현재도 진행 중”이라고 밝혔습니다.

외코크림은 또 수사 과정에서 북한 해킹조직의 암호화폐 탈취 자금 회수를 위해 기울인 노력을 소개하며 국제 파트너들과의 협력을 강조했습니다.

[외코크림 대변인실] “Økokrim has over time been working to trace the proceeds from the theft. Økokrim and its international partners have monitored the money laundering process around the clock. This has made it possible for Økokrim to trace a lot of the money and hamper the laundering process for the hackers. We work with the FBI's specialists in cryptocurrency tracing. This kind of cooperation between countries strengthens society's capacity to combat digital profit-motivated crime.”

“외코크림과 국제 파트너들이 밤낮으로 자금 세탁 과정을 감시했으며, 이로 인해 많은 자금을 추적하고 해커들의 자금 세탁 과정을 방해할 수 있었다”는 것입니다.

특히 미 연방수사국(FBI)의 암호화폐 추적 전문가와의 협력을 강조하면서, 이 같은 국가 간 협력은 디지털 수익을 추구하는 범죄 세력에 대처하는 사회의 역량을 강화한다고 말했습니다.

또 이번에 압류한 암호화폐 자금은 “북한 정권과 그들의 핵무기 프로그램에 자금을 조달하는 데 사용될 수도 있었다”며 “따라서 암호화폐를 추적하고 이 자산이 일반 화폐로 세탁되는 것을 막는 것이 중요하다”고 강조했습니다.

[외코크림 대변인실] “This is money that can be used to finance the North Korean regime and their nuclear weapons programme. It has therefore been important to trace the cryptocurrency and try to stop the assets from being converted into regular currency. Økokrim will continue to monitor the hackers' money laundering operation and will try to stop cryptocurrency from being converted into regular currency and seize the money before it can be used in the real world.”

그러면서 “외코크림은 해커들의 돈세탁 활동을 지속적으로 모니터링해 암호화폐가 일반 화폐로 전환되는 것을 막고 실제 화폐로 사용되기 전에 자금을 압수하기 위해 노력할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

앞서 미국 연방수사국(FBI)는 지난해 4월 수사를 통해 북한 라자루스와 APT 38이 비디오 게임 엑시 인피니티 운영 업체로부터 약 6억 2천만 달러 상당의 암호화폐를 탈취했다고 밝혔습니다.

이와 관련해 미국 재무부도 지난해 4월 엑시 인피니티 해킹 사건의 배후로 라자루스를 지목하고, 이들이 사용한 암호화폐 이더리움의 지갑주소를 새롭게 제재 목록에 추가해 이들의 자금을 동결했으며, 해당 계좌에 대한 미국인들의 거래를 금지한 바 있습니다.
