오스틴 국방장관 “미한 동맹 어느 때보다 강력…앞으로도 같이 갈 것”

미국 국방장관이 한국전쟁 정전협정 70주년을 맞아 철통같은 미한 동맹을 강조했습니다. 미국은 앞으로도 한국과 어깨를 나란히 하고 함께 나갈 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 이조은 기자입니다.

로이드 오스틴 미 국방장관은 한국전쟁 정전 70주년인 27일 “정전협정에 이어 미한 상호방위조약이 체결된 지 70년이 지난 지금 우리의 철통같은 동맹은 어느 때보다 강력하다”고 밝혔습니다.

[오스틴 국방장관] “Seventy years after the signing of the armistice, and the U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty that followed soon after, our ironclad alliance is stronger than ever. In the words of our alliance motto, "We go together"—and we will continue to do so, shoulder to shoulder.”

오스틴 장관은 이날 성명을 통해 이같이 밝히며 “‘같이 갑시다’라는 미한 동맹의 모토를 따라 우리는 앞으로도 어깨를 나란히 하고 함께 나갈 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

오스틴 장관은 “모든 미국인은 한국전쟁의 끔찍한 대가와 맹렬한 적들, 혹독한 지형, 열악한 환경 속에서 침략에 맞서 싸웠던 이들의 용맹을 기억해야 한다”며 “3만6천명 이상의 미군과 함께 한국 그리고 유엔군으로 싸운 파트너 국가에서도 수십만 명이 전사했다”고 밝혔습니다.

[오스틴 국방장관] “All Americans should remember the terrible cost of the Korean War and the valor of those who fought against aggression, facing fierce adversaries, harsh terrain, and pitiless conditions. More than 36,000 U.S. troops were killed in action, along with hundreds of thousands more from the Republic of Korea and partner nations serving in the United Nations Command. Even today, some 7,000 American service members from this war remain unaccounted for. We have a solemn duty to continue looking for answers for American families whose loved ones still remain missing in action seven decades on.”

그러면서 “오늘날에도 7천여 명의 미군 전사자의 행방이 확인되지 않고 있다”며 “70년이 지난 지금도 사랑하는 이들이 여전히 전쟁터에서 실종 상태인 미국 가족을 위해 우리는 계속 답을 찾아야 할 엄숙한 의무가 있다”고 말했습니다.

전쟁 이후 한국의 성장에 대해서도 강조했습니다.

오스틴 장관은 드와이트 아이젠하워 당시 대통령이 정전협정 체결 소식을 미국인들에게 전하며 ‘이 휴전이 자유로운 사람들이 평화로운 세계라는 목표에 한 걸음 더 가까워질 수 있도록 노력할 것’이라고 말한 것을 거론하면서 “실제로 그렇게 됐다”고 말했습니다.

[오스틴 국방장관] “During each of my three visits to the Republic of Korea as Secretary of Defense, I have seen firsthand its thriving democracy, dynamic economy, and innovative minds in action—all a living testament to the shared sacrifices of families in both of our countries.”

이어 “국방장관으로서 세 차례 한국을 방문할 때마다 한국의 번영하는 민주주의와 역동적인 경제, 그리고 혁신적인 정신이 작동하는 것을 직접 목격했다”며 “이는 미한 양국 가족들의 공동 희생의 살아있는 증거”라고 밝혔습니다.

한편 주한미공군 제8전투비행단은 27일 정전협정 70주년을 맞아 발표한 성명을 통해 “70년 전 자유롭고 민주적이며 번영하는 한반도를 지키기 위해 목숨을 바친 이들의 유산은 결코 잊혀지지 않을 것”이라고 말했습니다.

아울러 정전협정70주년을 계기로 미한동맹의 중요성도 거듭 강조했습니다.

Guided by our shared commitment to defend universal human rights, freedom, and the rule of law, the U.S. and ROK remain focused on our comprehensive global cooperation, deepening our robust regional engagement and strengthening our ironclad Alliance. Our alliance has successfully maintained peace in the Indo-Pacific region over the last seven decades and together our alliance will continue to provide future generations with a firm foundation to build upon.”

“미한동맹은 한국의 주권을 수호하고 미국과 한국 국민의 안전하고 밝은 미래를 달성하기 위해 연합방위태세를 유지하면서 민주주의와 평화 및 경제적 번영을 증진하는 데 필수적인 역할을 해왔다”는 것입니다.

아울러 “미한동맹은 지난 70년간 인도태평양 지역의 평화를 성공적으로 유지해왔으며, 앞으로도 미래 세대에게 굳건한 기반을 제공할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
