설리번 보좌관 “바이든 대통령 인태 지역 관여, 역대 최고 수준”

바이든 대통령이 최근의 미한일 정상회의 등 인도태평양 지역에 적극적으로 관여하고 있다고 백악관 고위 관리가 밝혔습니다. 이 지역에 대한 바이든 대통령의 관심이 역대 최고 수준이라고 강조했습니다. 이조은 기자입니다.

제이크 설리번 백악관 국가안보보좌관은 22일 조 바이든 대통령이 인도태평양 지역에 충분히 관여하지 않는다는 일각의 주장을 일축했습니다.

[녹취:설리번 보좌관] “With respect to the region, it's interesting that at the end of the Camp David Trilateral, there were various commentary pieces published, the thrust of which was, is the US doing too much in the region? .... He hosted a state visit with both the President of Korea and the Prime Minister of India...... He most recently held the trilateral at Camp David. ....So if you look at the totality of what the United States has done in the region in the course of the past two and a half years, and it is an unbelievable track record, not just of showing up in meetings…I would assert to you at more meetings or hosted more meetings in combination with showing up at them than any previous president, but actually in the results that we have generated, the relationships and alliances that we have managed to build from Northeast Asia, to the Philippines to Australia, the partnership with India, the work we've done with ASEAN, all while trying to effectively manage the competition with PRC.

설리번 보좌관은 이날 온라인 브리핑에서 바이든 대통령이 다음 달 열리는 동남아시아국가연합(ASEAN·아세안) 정상회의에 참석하지 않는 등 인도태평양 지역에 충분히 관여하지 않는다는 지적에 대해 “캠프 데이비드에서 열린 미한일 정상회의가 끝날 무렵 ‘미국이 이 지역에서 너무 많은 일을 하는 아닌가?’라는 요지의 다양한 논평들이 있었다”고 말했습니다.

이어 바이든 대통령이 한국 대통령과 인도 총리의 국빈 방미를 초청하고 최근에는 캠프 데이비드에서 미한일 정상회의를 개최한 것 등을 언급하며 “지난 2년 반 동안 미국이 지역에서 한 일을 종합해 보면 단순히 회의에 참석한 것을 넘어서는 믿을 수 없는 실적”이라고 평가했습니다.

“바이든 대통령은 역내 어느 대통령보다 더 많은 회의에 참석하거나 더 많은 회의를 주최했다”는 설명입니다.

특히 “실제로 우리는 동북아시아에서 필리핀, 호주에 이르는 관계와 동맹, 인도와의 파트너십, 아세안과의 협력 등의 결과를 창출했다”면서 “이 모든 것을 중국과의 경쟁을 효과적으로 관리하기 위한 노력과 동시에 이뤄냈다”고 강조했습니다.

설리번 보좌관은“지난 2년 반 동안 인도태평양에서 우리가 이룬 성과와 관여 실적은 미국은 물론 세계 어느 나라의 대통령과 비교해도 손색이 없다고 생각한다”고 말했습니다.

[녹취:설리번 보좌관] “ I would put our record of achievement and engagement in the Indo Pacific up against any American president in any other country in the word in the past two and a half years…we're not standing pat. We're going to continue to move forward with more high level active engagement as long as Joe Biden is President.”

이어 “우리는 여기에 만족하지 않을 것”이라며 “조 바이든이 대통령으로 있는 한 우리는 더욱 높은 수준의 적극적인 관여를 계속해 나갈 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
