미국 국무부는 북한 문제 해결에 대한 중국의 역할을 거듭 강조했습니다. 북한과 러시아의 무기 거래 가능성엔 여전히 우려한다는 입장을 밝혔습니다. 함지하 기자가 보도합니다.
매튜 밀러 국무부 대변인은 중국이 대북 영향력을 활용해 북한을 외교로 복귀시켜야 한다고 밝혔습니다.
밀러 대변인은 2일 정례브리핑에서 북중러 연대 강화 조짐에 관한 질문에 “우리가 중국 관리와의 대화에서 강조한 것 중 하나는 북한이 긴장 완화 단계를 밟고, 외교로 복귀하도록 촉구하는 데 있어 중국이 독보적인 위치에 있다는 것”이라며 “이는 블링컨 국무장관과 다른 장관도 강조한 부분”이라고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 밀러 대변인] “One of the things that we have urged in our conversations with Chinese officials, some of these, Secretary Blinken urged and other officials have urged, is that China is uniquely positioned to use its influence with the DPRK to urge the DPRK to take de-escalatory steps, to urge the DPRK to return to the diplomacy. All steps, we, of course, do not see the DPRK as willing to take. But we will continue to encourage them to use that influence to any degree that is possible that they are willing to do.”
이어 “물론 북한은 이 모든 조치를 취하려는 의지를 보이지 않고 있다”며 “그러나 우리는 중국이 할 수 있는 모든 범위에서 그러한 영향력을 사용하도록 계속 독려할 것”이라고 덧붙였습니다.
밀러 대변인은 “러시아와 북한의 관계 강화에 계속 우려한다”고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 밀러 대변인] “With respect to Russia, we continue to be concerned about increased ties between Russia and North Korea, especially as it comes to any potential transfer of weapons either from the DPRK to Russia or from Russia to the DPRK.”
그러면서 특별히 우려되는 부분에 대해 “북한에서 러시아로 혹은 러시아에서 북한으로 무기가 이전될 수 있는 가능성”이라고 설명했습니다.
