미 국무부가 북한과 조건 없이 만날 준비가 돼 있다며 북한의 긍정적인 답변을 기대한다고 또다시 밝혔습니다. 또한 한국, 일본 등 동맹과 공동의 대북 접근법을 논의하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
네드 프라이스 미 국무부 대변인은 24일 뉴욕 외신기자클럽이 개최한 온라인 기자회견에서 북한이 미국의 대화 제안에 응할 것을 거듭 촉구했습니다.
[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “We’ve said this a number of times now but we have no hostile intent toward the DPRK and we are prepared to meet with the DPRK without preconditions. We hope the DPRK will respond positively to our outreach.”
프라이스 대변인은 “이미 여러 번 밝혔듯이 미국은 북한에 적대적인 의사가 없으며, 북한과 전제조건 없이 만날 준비가 돼 있다”며 “미국의 제안에 북한이 긍정적으로 반응하기를 바란다”고 밝혔습니다.
프라이스 대변인은 이날 문대통령의 종전선언 제안에 대한 입장을 묻는 질문에 이같이 밝혔습니다.
프라이스 대변인은 “미국이 한반도에 영속적인 평화를 정착시키는데 전념하고 있으며, 이를 위한 최선의 방법은 북한과 대화, 외교를 펼치는 것”이라고 말했습니다.
>[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “We remain committed to achieving lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, and we believe the best way to do that is through dialogue and diplomacy with the DPRK. We will continue to seek engagement with the DPRK. As part of a calibrated practical approach, in order to make tangible progress that increases the security not only for the U.S. but also for our allies in the region, our deployed forces and our partners as well.”
프라이스 대변인은 “미국이 북한에 대해 세밀하게 조정된 실용적 접근법을 추구하고 있으며, 미국과 동맹, 해외 주둔 미군의 안보를 강화할 수 있는 가시적인 진전을 이루기 위해 북한에 대한 관여를 계속 모색할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
프라이스 대변인은 이번 주 블링컨 장관이 뉴욕에서 열린 유엔총회를 계기로 미한일 외교장관 회의를 열고 북한에 대한 공동의 접근법을 모색했다고 설명했습니다.
[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “In the meantime, you have seen us do a lot of concerted work, quite a bit of spade work with our allies and partners. And just this week Secretary Blinken held another trilateral engagement with his ROK and Japanese counterparts in New York. One of the primary topics of discussion in that trilateral engagement was a common approach towards the DPRK knowing that if we are to be effective, we need to continue to be, and to work in lockstep with our partners in the ROK and in Japan. When it comes to the relations between the ROK and the DPRK, we continue to believe that inter-Korean dialogue and engagement is a good thing and we continue to work closely with our allies on the broader agenda.”
프라이스 대변인은 효과적인 대북 정책을 위해서는 미국이 계속 한국과 일본의 파트너들과 보조를 맞춰 일해야 한다는 점을 알고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 프라이스 대변인은 남북 간 대화와 관여는 좋은 것이라고 믿는다고 말했습니다.
