북한의 최근 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 발사는 북한이 지난 몇 달간 보여준 도발 유형의 일부라고 백악관 국가안보좌관이 지적했습니다. 북한이 추가 발사에 나설 것이라는 전망도 내놨습니다. 박형주 기자가 보도합니다.
제이크 설리번 백악관 국가안보보좌관이 북한의 최근 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 발사와 관련해 추가 발사 가능성을 제기했습니다.
조 바이든 대통령의 유럽 순방을 수행하고 있는 설리번 보좌관은 25일 폴란드로 향하는 기내에서 진행한 브리핑에서 ‘북한의 ICBM 발사가 바이든 대통령의 순방 일정과 연관이 있느냐’는 질문을 받고 이같이 말했습니다.
[녹취: 설리번 보좌관] “We took the somewhat unusual step of putting out a statement several days ago from the Biden administration describing these two earlier tests as being testing the capabilities of an ICBM which North Korea itself did not advertise, but our intelligence community determined that we declassified that information. In that statement, we warned that there would be more ICBM tests and that's what happened here. We see this as part of a pattern of testing and provocation from North Korea that is has played out over the course of the past months and will continue to play out. We think there is likely more in store.”
설리번 보좌관은 바이든 행정부가 지난 2월 28일과 3월 4일 북한의 앞선 두 차례의 시험을 ICBM 역량 시험으로 평가한 이례적인 성명을 발표했다고 설명했습니다.
그러면서 북한은 이들 시험에 대해 선전하지 않았지만 미 정보당국이 관련 정보를 공개하기로 결정했다고 덧붙였습니다.
그러면서 “당시 성명에서 우리는 추가 ICBM 실험이 있을 것이라고 경고했고, 그것이 바로 일어난 것”이라고 설리번 보좌관은 말했습니다.
설리번 보좌관은 이어 북한의 최근 ICBM 시험에 대해 “우리는 이를 북한의 시험과 도발 유형의 일부로 보고 있다”면서 “그것이 지난 몇 달간 벌어진 일이고 앞으로도 일어날 것”이라며 “더 많은 발사가 있을 것으로 본다”고 덧붙였습니다.
설리번 보좌관은 그러나 북한의 이번 ICBM발사가 바이든 대통령의 유럽 순방 일정을 고려해 계획됐다는 특별한 징후는 없다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 설리번 보좌관] “And we don't see any particular indication that this test went on this day for this reason. Indeed, some of what is, you know, may be driving the tempo of the testing relates to the badly failed tests that occurred just a few days ago, but most of the decision making on their nuclear testing program occurs within the context of the Korean Peninsula and North Korean view of its security situation, not what's happening with President Biden's travel schedule,”
설리번 보좌관은 “며칠 전 ICBM 시험 발사에 실패한 것이 속도를 높이는 이유와 연관됐을 수 있다”며 “그러나 핵과 미사일 프로그램에 관한 북한 결정의 대부분은 한반도 안보 상황에 대한 북한의 관점에 따라 이뤄지고, 바이든 대통령의 순방 일정과는 관계가 없다”고 말했습니다.
