미 국방부 “북한의 핵실험 준비 ‘주시’…한국 등 동맹에 전략적 억지 역량 제공”

미국 국방부가 북한의 잠재적인 추가 핵실험 준비 움직임을 주시하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 한반도 비핵화에 전념하고 있다는 입장도 강조하며 한국 등 동맹국들에게 전략적 억지 역량을 제공하는데 초점을 맞추고 있다고 설명했습니다. 안소영 기자입니다.

미국 국방부가 북한의 핵실험 가능성을 언급하며 동맹국과의 긴밀히 협력하고 있다는 점을 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “We continue to believe that North Korea is preparing for a potential future nuclear test. It's something that we're keeping a close eye on. But we'll continue to stay very closely in touch with the Republic of Korea, with Japan and our other allies and partners in the region.”

패트릭 라이더 국방부 대변인은 20일 정례브리핑에서 북한의 핵실험 가능성에 대한 질문에 “우리는 북한이 잠재적인 추가 핵실험을 준비하고 있는 것으로 계속 믿고 있다”며 “이는 우리가 주시하고 있는 것”이라고 말했습니다.

이어 “하지만 우리는 한국과 일본, 역내 다른 동맹국 및 파트너들과도 계속 긴밀히 접촉할 것”이라고 덧붙였습니다.

‘미국의 전략폭격기 B-1B 괌 전개가 북한을 염두에 둔 것이냐’는 질문에는 즉답을 피한 채 잠재적 도발을 막기 위해 동맹국과 협력하고 있다는 메시지를 보낸 것이라고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “So it's not uncommon for us to have bomber task forces, which conduct operations around the world for two reasons. One, to send a very clear message that we will support our partners and allies around the world. And to that we do have the capability to conduct global operations on any given day. So to answer your question, it is meant to send a message that the United States stands closely with its allies and partners to deter potential provocation.”

라이더 대변인은 “우리가 보유한 폭격기 기동부대가 전 세계에서 작전을 수행하는 것은 두 가지 이유에서 드문 일이 아니다”라면서 “하나는 우리가 전 세계 파트너들과 동맹국들을 지지할 것이라는 아주 분명한 메시지를 보내기 위한 것”이라고 설명했습니다.

또 “우리는 언제든 국제적 작전을 수행할 역량이 있다”고 말했습니다.

그러면서 이번 B-1B 전략폭격기 괌 전개는 “잠재적인 도발 억제를 위해 미국이 동맹국 및 파트너들과 긴밀히 협력하고 있다는 메시지를 발신하기 위한 것”이라고 라이더 대변인은 강조했습니다.

라이더 대변인은 미국 전술핵의 한반도 재배치에 관한 질문에는 “분명 우리는 한국과 오랜 방위 관계를 맺고 있다”며 “한반도에 상당한 규모의 미군이 주둔하고 있다”는 점을 상기시켰습니다.

[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “Clearly we have a long standing defence relationship with the Republic of Korea. We have a significant U.S. force presence on the peninsula. The United States, the Republic of Korea and other allies and partners in the region to include Japan conduct regular exercises to ensure that our forces have interoperability that we can work together with the idea to defend one another's. So our focus will continue to be on working together with the Republic of Korea and with our allies and partners in the region to preserve not only free and open in the Indo-Pacific but also regional stability and security.”

이어 “미국과 한국, 일본을 포함한 역내 동맹국과 파트너들은 우리 군이 상호운용성을 갖춰 서로를 방어한다는 구상에 협력하는 것을 보장하기 위해 정기적인 훈련을 실시한다”고 말했습니다.

“따라서 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양뿐 아니라 역내 안정과 안보를 보존하기 위해 우리는 한국과 역내 동맹국, 파트너들과의 협력에 초점을 맞출 것”이라고 설명했습니다.

아울러 북핵 위협이 고조되는 가운데 한국의 핵무장과 관련한 입장을 묻는 질문에는 한반도 비핵화에 전념하고 있다는 점을 분명히 했습니다.

[녹취: 라이더 대변인]” So from a policy standpoint, we're still committed to denuclearization of the entire peninsula. Our focus is on providing a strategic deterrent capability to the Republic of Korea and to our allies and partners in the region.”

라이더 대변인은 “정책적 관점에서 볼 때 우리는 여전히 한반도 전체에 대한 비핵화에 전념하고 있다”며 “우리는 한국과 역내 동맹국, 파트너에게 전략적 억지 역량을 제공하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
