미국 공화당의 댄 설리번 상원의원이 한국전쟁은 잊힌 전쟁이 아니라 ‘숭고한 전쟁’으로 불려야 한다고 지적했습니다. 워싱턴에 ‘한국전 전사자 추모의 벽’이 들어서도록 지원한 한국에 감사의 뜻을 표하는 결의안을 상정할 것이라고도 밝혔습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.
알래스카주의 댄 설리번 공화당 상원의원이 1일 본회의장에서 ‘한국전 참전용사 기념공원’의 역사적 의미를 강조했습니다.
[댄 설리번 미 상원의원] “It is the nobility of service from our veterans that really is epitomized by service in the Korean war. The memorial has many beautifully engraved sayings, but one…depicts the nobility of American military service, particularly as it relates to that war. It says, our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.”
설리번 의원은 한국전의 교훈 중 하나는 “참전용사들이 한국전에서 보여준 숭고함”이라며 “워싱턴 한국전 참전용사 기념공원에는 아름답게 새겨진 많은 글귀가 있지만, 그중 하나는 특히 한국전과 관련해 미군 참전의 숭고함을 묘사하고 있다”고 말했습니다.
이어 “그 글귀는 ‘전혀 알지 못하는 나라와 만난 적도 없는 사람들을 지키기 위해 부름에 응한 아들과 딸들을 우리나라는 기린다’는 것”이라고 소개했습니다.
설리번 의원은 한국전이 ‘잊힌 전쟁’으로 불려온 데 대해 “나는 항상 그것이 참전 용사들의 희생과 숭고함, 그리고 이 잔인한 전쟁의 의미를 경시한다고 생각해왔다”고 말했습니다.
[설리번 의원] “I have always thought it downplays the sacrifice and nobility and meaning of this very brutal conflict. Instead of the forgotten war, we should call it the noble war because it was a noble undertaking…Anyone who knows the history of this war or visits the memorial or knows a Korean war veteran or their family members knows that this was a noble undertaking by our great Nation, saving a country--literally saving a country--and we sacrificed a lot for it.”
그러면서 “한국전은 숭고한 일이었기 때문에 우리는 그 전쟁을 잊힌 전쟁이 아니라 숭고한 전쟁이라고 불러야 한다”고 강조했습니다.
이어 “한국전의 역사를 알거나 한국전 참전용사 기념공원을 방문한 사람, 또는 한국전 참전용사나 그 가족을 아는 사람이라면 한국전은 말 그대로 한 나라를 구하는 위대한 국가의 숭고한 사업이었다는 것을 안다”며 “우리는 그것을 위해 많은 것을 희생했다”고 덧붙였습니다.
설리번 의원은 또 “반향을 불러일으키는 한 가지는 자유와 관련한 한국전의 매우 구체적인 결과”라고 강조했습니다.
[설리번 의원] “What also resonates are the very, very tangible results of the war in terms of freedom…There are very few better illustrations of the disparity between freedom and authoritarianism than the image of that Korean Peninsula at night with those two countries--one is bright and alive, and one is dark and literally dead. American citizens, American soldiers, American military kept an entire country free.”
이어 “한반도 야경 사진보다 자유와 독재주의의 차이를 더 잘 보여주는 것은 없다”며 사진에서 “한 나라(한국)는 밝고 생기가 넘치는데 다른 한 나라(북한)는 어둡고 말 그대로 죽어있다”고 말했습니다.
그러면서 한국전을 통해 “미국인과 미군, 그리고 미국의 군대는 한 나라 전체를 자유롭게 했다”고 강조했습니다.
설리번 의원은 워싱턴 한국전 참전용사 기념공원에 ‘한국전 전사자 추모의 벽’이 완공될 수 있도록 이 사업을 지원한 한국 정부와 국민에 감사의 뜻을 표하는 결의안 상정을 준비 중이라고 밝혔습니다.
[설리번 의원] “I am working on a Senate resolution, and I would love to get some of my colleagues here on the floor right now to join this resolution with me. It is a simple resolution saying thank you to the Korean government and the Korean people…”
설리번 의원은 “잊힌 전쟁이 아닌 숭고한 전쟁에 나선 한국전 참전용사들에게 감사를 표한다”고 말했습니다.
[설리번 의원] “I want to thank our veterans, our Korean War veterans, who served in the noble war--not the forgotten war, the noble war, a proud moment of history between our two great nations--a history that has bonded us--the Republic of Korea and the United States of America--for decades.”
그러면서 “이 전쟁은 미국과 한국, 이 훌륭한 두 나라 역사에서 자랑스러운 순간이고, 이 역사는 한국과 미국을 수십 년 동안 결속했다”고 강조했습니다.
