백악관 “푸틴, 김정은에 ‘외교가 유일 해법’ 메시지 전해야”

미국 백악관은 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 김정은 북한 국무위원장에게 외교가 한반도 문제 해결의 유일한 해법이라는 메시지를 전달해야 한다고 촉구했습니다. 양국 간 협력 강화 추세에 큰 우려를 갖고 있다는 점도 재확인했습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.

카린 장 피에르 백악관 대변인은 18일 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령의 방북 소식에 대해 “러시아와 북한 간 협력 심화가 하나의 추세”라며 우려를 나타냈습니다.

[녹취: 장 피에르 대변인] “Deepening cooperation between Russia and the DPRK is a trend. That should be of great concern to anyone interested in maintaining peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, upholding the global non-proliferation regime, abiding by the UN Security Council resolutions and supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend for their freedom and their independence against Russian's aggression and obviously Russia's invasion. This is something we have been warning about for some time as DPRK's provision of weapons to Russia has helped enable Russia's brutal war in Ukraine.”

장 피에르 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 관련 질문에 이같이 밝히고 “이는 한반도의 평화와 안정을 유지하고 국제 비확산 체제를 지지하며, 유엔 안보리 결의를 준수하고 러시아의 침략에 맞서 자유와 독립을 지키려는 우크라이나 국민들을 지원하는 데 관심이 있는 이들이라면 누구나 크게 우려해야 할 사안”이라고 지적했습니다.

이어 “북한의 대러 무기 제공이 러시아의 잔인한 우크라이나 전쟁을 가능하게 하는 데 도움이 되고 있는 가운데 우리는 이에 대해 경고해왔다”고 말했습니다.

그러면서 지난달 중러 정상회담에서 양국 정상이 한반도 문제 해결을 위한 유일한 해법이 정치·외교적 수단임을 재확인한 사실을 상기시키면서 “우리는 푸틴 대통령이 이번 회담에서 김 위원장에게 이러한 메시지를 전달하기를 바란다”고 말했습니다

[녹취: 장 피에르 대변인] “So we noted that Putin and XI joint statement last month called for all sides to reaffirm that political and diplomatic means as the only way to resolve issues on the Korean Peninsula. We hope this is a message that Putin will convey to Kim in their discussion. As we have said before, we don't believe any country should give Mr. Putin a platform to promote the war of aggression that we're obviously currently seeing in Ukraine and Russia we believe is blatantly violating the UN Charter and working to undermine the international system. And so, this is something obviously that we're watching very closely and we continue to do so.”

장 피에르 대변인은 “우리는 어떤 나라도 현재 우크라이나에서 분명히 목격되고 있는 러시아의 침략 전쟁을 부추기는 기반을 푸틴 대통령에게 제공돼서는 안된다고 믿는다”면서 “러시아는 유엔 헌장을 명백히 위반하고 국제 체제를 약화시키려 하고 있다”고 지적했습니다.

그러면서 “우리는 이 문제를 분명히 매우 주의 깊게 지켜보고 있으며, 앞으로도 계속 그렇게 할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

국무부도 푸틴 러시아 대통령의 북한 방문 소식을 알고 있다면서 양국 협력 가능성에 대한 우려를 거듭 확인했습니다.

[국무부 대변인] “Deepening cooperation between Russia and the DPRK is a trend that should be of great concern to anyone interested in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, upholding the global non-proliferation regime, abiding by UN Security Council resolutions, and supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence against Russia’s brutal invasion.”

국무부 대변인은 18일 VOA의 관련 논평 요청에 “러시아와 북한 간 협력 심화는 한반도의 평화와 안정 유지, 국제 비확산 체제 유지, 유엔 안보리 결의 준수, 러시아의 잔인한 침략에 맞서 자유와 독립을 수호하는 우크라이나 국민을 지원하는 데 관심이 있는 이들이라면 누구나 관심을 가져야 하는 추세”라고 밝혔습니다.
